Student Frequently Asked Questions

 ATTENDANCE

1. How will attendance be taken for my classes?

  • Instructors will log in and record attendance just like in a live/in-person course.  You are required to be available during scheduled course time.  Faculty may also use asynchronous and synchronous* options to record your attendance.

  • Faculty will also communicate with you by email, as well as through a news and announcements page on eLearning.  Students should log into their course at the class scheduled time and check their emails regularly for communications from faculty.  

*Synchronous learning refers to a learning event in which a group of students are engaging in learning at the same time. Before learning technology allowed for synchronous learning environments, most online education took place through asynchronous learning methods.

  2. What if I want to come to campus to meet with my instructor?

  • Please contact your instructor by email to schedule meeting before coming to campus.  We also recommend meeting by phone, web conference or virtually.  Your instructor will provide specific instructions for scheduling meetings. 

 3. How soon can I access my courses?

  • You have access as soon as you log into MyAllen/eLearning.  Then, go directly to the course page.

INSTRUCTION DELIVERY

 1. Will we still be utilizing MyAllen/eLearning? 

  • YES. The Online learning platform used for basic content delivery is MyAllen/eLearning.  It can be accessed at https://my.allenuniversity.edu/ICS/   Faculty may also provide information about additional online resources for content delivery.

 2. Are there specific tech resources that my instructor will use to teach my class?

  • Faculty may utilize virtual/web-conferencing platforms (Zoom/Online Meetings/Cengage Platforms/Microsoft Teams). for remote/live instruction; however, some may also utilize other online or phone conferencing apps to teach their class.  Students are required to be available when live instruction through these means is scheduled.

 3. What if I am unavailable during live instruction?

  • An instructor may provide recordings of live lectures, playbacks for conference calls or other materials for instruction.  Contact your instructor directly or check the eLearning course page for access to these materials.  Note: It is the students responsibility to follow up with the instructor if absent.

TECHNOLOGY

 1. Do I need to use University Email/username for access?

  • YES. To access your course, you must log into MyAllen/eLearning. You will need your Login In ID and Password. If you encounter a problem with MyAllen/eLearning contact the AU Technical Support/Help Desk by telephone or email.

2. What if I cannot access eLearning/MyAllen?

  • Send an email immediately to: support@allenuniversity.edu

 3. Do I need a computer?

  • Yes. We recommend utilizing a computer/laptop for the best view and access; however, you can also utilize most smart phones.  Smart phones will provide access too many features and in many instances allow you to complete work on the go. Pads may also be used.

4. Can I use a smart phone for my online course?

  • YES.  You can access your eLearning course from your smart phone; however, full features may not be available to you.  It is imperative that you utilize a full computer or pad for the greatest ease accessing content and completing assignments. 


TEXTBOOKS

 1. What about textbooks?

  • Allen University students are not required to purchase textbooks.  Most courses utilize Cengage textbooks, otherwise there is a course pack and/or faculty instructional materials provided. Some classes may also utilize (free) open educational resources.  Your instructor will provide you with specifics concerning their course.  Cengage e-Textbooks access can be accessed here: https://www.cengage.com/student/
