The method(s) used by Allen University to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act follows.
The University determined the eligibility of all students based on Title IV criteria. Next, the institution calculated its student full-time equivalents (FTE’s) to provide a fair methodology for all eligible students to benefit from the funding. The number of students computes to 630 FTE’s. That number was divided by the total dollars awarded of $794,838. Six hundred and fourteen (614) full-time undergraduate students each were allocated $1,261.64. The remainder of $20,186 was split proportionally based on the number of credit hours enrolled at the institution to 25 part-time graduate and undergraduate students.
The eligible students received a letter dated April 28, 2020 signed by the President of Allen University informing them that Congress by way of the CARES Act had granted emergency assistance funds for Title IV eligible students; they need to make sure their addresses were correctly listed in the University’s self-service system; checks would be mailed by the end of that week; and the money would be subject to taxes. The letter also listed a University contact person in case the students had questions. See the attached copy of the letter.
