Moreover, these contributions play a key role in maintaining the institution's financial health. For the past three years, Allen University has earned a commendable 2.8 rating on the Financial Responsibility Index Scale, a scale that ranges from -1 to 3, with 3 being the maximum achievable score. Good Samaritan - Waverly Hospital Restoration Project
Allen University is proud to announce the completion of the renovation of the historic Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital, a pivotal institution that served Columbia's African-American community during the era of segregation from 1952 to 1973.
This renovated and expanded landmark now hosts the Institute for Civility, a permanent memorial dedicated to the Emanuel Nine—the nine precious lives tragically lost on June 17, 2015, in Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C. In addition to the Institute for Civility, the facility also houses Allen University's School of Education, the Dickerson-Green Theological Seminary, and the Waverly Wall Museum Portrait Display.
The Institute for Civility is named in honor of the late state Senator Clementa Pinckney, an Allen University alumnus from the Class of 1995 and former pastor of Mother Emanuel AME Church. Known as a statesman for justice, Senator Pinckney advocated for positivity and civil discourse throughout his life. He earned respect both within South Carolina and nationally for his commitment to equality and human dignity. The Institute aims to embody Senator Pinckney's values by educating students on how to approach disagreements and differing viewpoints in a peaceful manner. Among the Emanuel Nine, two other victims were also Allen University graduates—Reverend Daniel Simmons ('67) and Tywanza Sanders ('14).
The Waverly Wall Museum, another key feature of the renovated facility, pays tribute to individuals born in the hospital and to the medical professionals who committed their talents to serving the community. This visual gallery showcases photographs and other historic artifacts in both permanent and rotating displays. These exhibitions create a vital connection between the hospital's significant past and our ongoing journey toward a more inclusive future, enriching both our understanding and appreciation of the history of the Waverly Hospital and the community it served.
With the completion of this monumental project, Allen University continues to forge ahead in its mission to honor history, inspire positive change, and serve the needs of its diverse student body.
