Ya’Donnis Hardaway recently enjoyed campus life as a senior and wrestling star. Today, he is a full-time Lab Scientist with the premier nuclear facility, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. This incredible opportunity came through a partnership between Allen and SRNS, facilitated by the DOE Workforce Grant.
Ya’Donnis was discovered while speaking at a symposium recommended by his then professor, Dr. Oluwole Ariyo. The encounter led to a promising mentorship with renowned scientist Dr. James Maner; giving Ya’Donnis the opportunity to dive into a hands-on learning environment.
Reflecting on his experience, Ya’Donnis addressed AU students in attendance, “When Dr. Ariyo asks you to do anything, please do it! It could change your life.
Before the completion of his summer internship with Savannah River, they promptly offered him a full-time position three months after graduation. His employment will consist of utilizing advanced equipment such as the Scanning Electron Microscope. “Internships are key to becoming successful out of college,” Ya’Donnis mentions.
His journey is a powerful testament to the success of Allen University’s academic-to-workforce pipeline. It also highlights the impact of strategic partnerships in creating meaningful career opportunities for students.
Now calling Aiken, SC home, Ya’Donnis has officially transitioned from intern to employee. “I never thought presenting at the symposium would lead to becoming a scientist, but it did,” he shares. “During these uncertain times, students often wonder if their dreams are still possible. I want them to know, they are!”
Recently, Ya’Donnis visited Allen alongside his mentors, Dr. Ariyo, Dr. Maner, and key members of the team responsible for fostering the partnership between SRNS and Allen University.
