Our Shared Heritage
The church has always been Allen’s foundation.
From the founding to the buildings that still stand on campus, congregations have shaped Allen’s story.
- 1870Allen is founded by the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
- 1941The foundation of the Joseph Simeon Flipper Library is laid under the leadership of Bishop Joseph Simeon Flipper.
- 1943The Flipper Library is dedicated on March 3, 1943.
- TodayAllen is home to the Dickerson-Green Theological Seminary, preparing leaders for ministry.
The library was built with money that “came in in bits” from students, faculty, alumni, friends of Allen, and the loyal ministers and members of the African Methodist Episcopal churches of South Carolina.
