Allen University Announces Mr. Marques Graham as New Director of Bands

July 16, 2025 Allen University

Columbia, SC — July 13, 2025 — Allen University proudly announces the appointment of Mr. Marques Graham as its new Director of Bands, marking a dynamic new era for the university's acclaimed music program. A respected educator, accomplished musician, and visionary leader in the world of HBCU band performance, Mr. Graham brings over 24 years of experience and a legacy of excellence to Allen University.

Mr. Graham joins us from Wiley University. He is recognized nationally for building and revitalizing collegiate band programs, including the successful launch of two HBCU bands and the revitalization of a third. He has conducted halftime performances for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars on three occasions and at the NCAA National Basketball Championship. His programs have earned numerous accolades, including Best New Instrumental Program by Florida Leaders, Magazine.

Known for his transformative leadership, Mr. Graham has made history by leading the smallest ever school to perform in the prestigious Honda Battle of the Bands competition. Mr. Graham is no stranger to Allen. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he contributed to the Band of Gold’s game day performance with a flawless arrangement of “Stairway to Heaven,” further demonstrating his commitment to musical excellence.

Mr. Graham’s dedication is recognized among his peers as he was named Public School Teacher of the Year! He emphasizes program development, recruitment, fundraising, and creating collaborative, performance-driven learning environments. He is a proud graduate of South Carolina State University and Full Sail University; and also, a life member of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Marques Graham to the Allen University family,” said Dr. Ernest McNealey, President and CEO of Allen University. “His experience, passion, and proven track record in HBCU band culture will elevate our program and inspire our students.” Mr. Graham begins his role effective immediately and already preparing for an exciting 2025– 2026 performance season.
