Columbia, SC – April 22, 2021 | Michael Grant, Allen University’s newly appointed head men’s basketball coach has big goals as he chases his 300th career win at Allen University.

An 18-year veteran to coaching, Grant brings solid track record to the goal. Before transitioning to AU Athletics, Grant has coached at athletic programs ranging from the NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I and earned an impressive 56% win rate in the process.

A legend in his own right, and no stranger to the SIAC, Grant led one SIAC team to a second-place ranking in the conference, taking the team to the regional finals of Division II South Regional.

“Mr. Grant is strong leader, with a consistent track record. That along with his drive will be an excellent example for our student-athletes,” Dr. Ernest McNealey, Allen University President said welcoming the new coach. “His dedication to discipline will create the stability within our basketball program that will benefit our student-athletes on and off of the court.”

“I have a great respect for Dr. McNealey,” Grant said. “I look forward to working for him, and alongside Assistant Athletic Director, Teddy Keaton. I’m not only striving for my 300th coaching win, but to bring excellence and longevity to the program as we endeavor into the SIAC.”

Grant, a native of Cleveland, OH began his coaching career at his alma mater, Malone College in Ohio, where he first studied under Hal Smith as a student assistant. Grant led as a full-time assistant under Smith before heading to the University of Michigan where he helped coach younger brother Gary Grant, who eventually became the Big Ten Player of the Year in 1988 and went 15th overall in the 1988 NBA draft.

Grant attributes much of his success to a strong and anchored foundation in his family dynamic. Alongside his loving wife Charmane, he is a father to Chris 39, Raynesha 30, and Lauren 28.
