(Columbia, S.C.) - September 11, 2020, Allen University partnered with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS), to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) seeking to establish a collaborative endeavor to provide employment and educational opportunities and bridge the gap between academic study and its application in professional practice. The emerging relationship is a link in the chain of powerful partnerships between SRS and South Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Stuart MacVean, president and CEO of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, explained that the partnership's goal is to ensure the broad and growing workforce at SRS reflects our state's diversity with locally educated, home-grown talent and creates powerful partnerships between SRS and South Carolina's HBCUs.
U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, HBCU advocate and consistently loyal Allen University friend, explained that "in every corner of rural communities across South Carolina there are gifted students with great potential and limited opportunity."
The 2016 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) economic impact report detailed Allen University's $22 million economic impact for its local and regional economies.
"If you have aspirations to be successful in the field of STEM, your first degree should come from an HBCU. The internal investments in these institutions far exceed anything that one can imagine. We are very pleased to be here today, and we will put this memorandum to the test," Dr. Ernest McNealey said after signing the MOU.
The MOU establishes internship opportunities across various disciplines, campus visits from professional talent recruiters from SRNS to conduct resume-building opportunities, and mock interview sessions.
Also, in attendance was fellow UNCF HBCU Benedict College. The MOUs were signed at the City Council Chambers in Columbia, South Carolina.
