Allen University faculty earn Master Class for Teaching Online Badges

(Columbia, S.C.) – Two Allen University faculty members recently earned Master Class for Teaching Online Badges from Arizona State University Continuing and Professional Education program. Dr. Tracey Ann Carter, chair of the social sciences department, and Dr. Toni Sims Muhammad, associate vice president for academic affairs–distance education, completed a 2-week asynchronous online course on effective pedagogy in the online teaching and learning space. Hopkins selected for Yale University Fellowship Program

(Columbia, S.C.) – Dr. Jamal-Dominique Hopkins, dean of the Allen University Dickerson-Green Seminary, was selected as a Christ and Being Human Pedagogy Fellow at Yale University’s Center for Faith and Culture. As a fellow, Hopkins will join a team focused on evaluating, developing and proliferating coursework that deepens engagement with Christ across institutions of Christian higher education. “All That Can Be Imagined” Scholarship Tour visits northern South Carolina

(Columbia, S.C.) – The Allen University “All That Can Be Imagined” Scholarship Tour continued on June 18 in northern South Carolina traveling to Great Falls, Lancaster, Rock Hill and York. The first stop was in Great Falls to present an AU Merit Scholarship of up to $8,000 to Donnell “DJ” Adams of Great Falls High School. Allen hosts “Women who Mattered” portrait exhibit

(Columbia, S.C.) – On Monday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Chappelle Hall Gallery, Allen University will host an opening reception for its portrait exhibit, “Women who Mattered.”

The exhibit will feature women who played an integral role to Allen University. The exhibit will include historical figures, such as Dr. Sylvia Poole Swinton, an alum who served as interim president and chairperson of the Teacher Education Department at Allen University; Dr. Margaret A. Dixon, an alum and first African-American president of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP); and Flossie McClain, former registrar of Allen who penned Allen University’s alma mater.

Following the opening reception, the “Women who Mattered” Exhibit will be on display Tuesday, March 24 through Saturday, March 28 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, March 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Monday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, March 31, the institution will culminate its Women’s History Month events with a Women Achievers Panel at 6:30 p.m. in Chappelle Hall Auditorium.

Allen celebrates Women’s History Month with Women Achievers Panel

(Columbia, S.C.) –In honor of Women’s History Month, Allen University will host a Women Achievers Panel on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30p.m. in the Chappelle Hall Auditorium.

The focus of the panel is to celebrate women achievers. The panelists are Chanda Jefferson, Dr. Robin L. Coletrain, Samantha D. Farlow-Moyd, Quantel Hudson, Sebrina Robinson and Shanteka Glover.

Jefferson is the current 2020 South Carolina Teacher of the Year. She also currently serves as the science department chair, STEM lead teacher and science teacher at Fairfield Central High School in Winnsboro, S.C.

Dr. Coletrain was named the 2020 Middle Level Principal of the Year by South Carolina. She currently serves as principal of W.A. Perry Middle School in Columbia, S.C.

Farlow-Moyd has managed her own law firm, Farlow-Moyd Law Firm, since 2009. Her practice arears include criminal, family law, personal injury and probate matters.

Allen presents Faith, Science and the Black Church Spring Institute

(Columbia, S.C.) – The Allen University Dickerson-Green Theological Seminary will present the Faith, Science, and the Black Church Spring Institute March 13-14 at Allen University in the Chappelle Auditorium and Gallery.

The institute will focus on the relationship between faith and science, and challenge participants to explore these topics.

The presenter for the institute is Jacqueline C. Rivers, who currently

serves as a sociology lecturer at Harvard University. She is the executive director and senior fellow for social science and policy for the Seymour Institute for Black Church and Policy Studies. [Read More]

Allen to host 3rd Annual Preserving the Legacy Conference

(Columbia, S.C.) – Allen University will host the 3rd Annual Preserving the Legacy of HBCUs Conference: “Birth of a Nation” on February 18 from 8:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Chappelle Gallery.

The keynote speaker for the conference is former South Carolina House of Representative and current CNN political analyst Bakari Sellers. Sellers made history in 2006 when he defeated a 26-year incumbent State Representative to

become the youngest member of the South Carolina State Legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation at 22 years old. Sellers earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College.

The conference will serve as a working workshop that will function as an incubator between sister HBCUs and stake-holding organizations. The goal of these collaborations is to produce concrete, generationally-impactful initiatives designed to sustain HBCUs into the 21st century.

Allen University celebrates 150 years during Founders’ Day Convocation

(Columbia, S.C.) – Allen University will host its annual Founders’ Day Convocation on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 10:30 a.m. in Chappelle Hall Auditorium. Bishop Samuel L. Green, Sr., Allen University Board of Trustees chairman, will deliver the convocation’s keynote address.

Bishop Green is currently the 125th Bishop of the Seventh Episcopal District. Bishop Green holds a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies from the University of South Florida, Tampa; a Master of Divinity from the Turner Theological Seminary, Atlanta; and the Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary, Atlanta.

Upon taking the helm of the 7th District, Bishop Green became Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Allen University. He brought a vision and understanding of higher education governance that lit the spark of resurgence at Allen. The University reaffirmed its accreditation, brought stability to its finances, returned football, launched a marching band, moved from a Level II to a Level III university to offer master's degrees, and launched the fully-accredited Dickerson-Green (Graduate) Theological Seminary.
